The reason Matt Nathanson succeeds with each of his albums is because of the stories they hold. Each and every song produces a feeling of happiness, loss, pride and pain, something not only him as the artist has gathered, yet we as the listener may have or currently ARE going though. Modern Love is just another journey he is taking is fans along for the ride in. This album is one that truly represents where Matt has come from and where he wants to see himself going. San Fransisco would be proud.
Saw mattyN way back in 2002 at a very small venue. He was raw, hilarious & perfect with his 12 string. I instantly fell in love then.
I know he's still doing his thing and I support progression as he finds more success—but....i have to say, I'd rather hear him play at a small café and leave the production behind. I admire his ability to bring life to a performance with his stories. He is much more than a talented songwriter—he is brilliantly witty and has a truly addictive personality.
The production in this album removes all of that for me.
It's still the same beautiful songwriting but it's smothered with horns, beats and feels forced.
I'm still in love, but not in a modern way.
Matt Nathanson...... Stay lovely.
